Circular polarising filters help to minimise the appearance of reflections from shiny surfaces such as glass and water. Reflections on surfaces are often more apparent in photographs than they appear to the naked eye and a poalrising filter is a vital tool to cut these reflections down to give photographs a more natural appearance. Some common applications include photographing shop window displays, or landscapes with lakes and streams.
The filter is most effective when the reflective surface is at 45 degrees to the camera.
