Neutral density filters (also known as ND filters) are used to reduce the level of light entering a camera, enabling more control over exposure and depth of field without affecting colour or contrast thanks to the filter’s neutral grey tone. ND filters are especially useful in bright light conditions to avoid overexposure, and for creating long-exposure shots in daylight.
ND filters also enable the use of wider apertures, allowing for the creation of shallow depths of field in bright conditions. This makes them additionally useful for portrait shooters as well as landscape photographers, and ensures this useful set of three filters (1-stop, 2-stops and 3-stops) with a 77mm filter thread will find its way into many kit bags.
